Notes from our Journal

Each week we send parents of children in our Forest School a recap along with photos.
Here are some excerpts.

Happy Friday Forest School Families!

October 7th – We had another wet start to our week. The children worked together to set up our rain tarp to create a dry “fort” area to keep our gear and eat our lunch. It was a great exercise in teamwork, and we have begun to work on tying knots. We stayed much drier than last week so thank you to all for providing your children with proper rain gear!

We played a game of “Match the Muddy Boot-Print to the Boot” and discussed how we were using our boot-prints to identify which child had stepped in the mud, just like we can use animal tracks to identify which animals have been here.

Oct 17th – We were lucky to have the opportunity to closely observe a group of male and female brown-headed cowbirds making a pit-stop in Central Park on their way south. Fall migration season is a very exciting time!  When you are out walking, especially in the parks, take the time to notice if you spot any birds that you don’t normally see in NYC.

Jan 22nd – Good morning families. Lower lows today but sunny. As with yesterday, sustained temperatures of less that 20°f means we will be limiting our outdoor time.  We will go out in two small groups in short shifts.  Today we will be experimenting with freezing water. We will time how long it takes different amounts of water and other liquids to freeze. In a large clear container, the center should remain liquid after the top has frozen, demonstrating why it is typically unsafe to walk in a frozen pond, even when it appears solid.  We will also attempt to make icicles and ice paint. If anyone wishes for their child to remain indoors all day today, that will be an option – please message privately before 10am.

April 22nd – Forest K/1 is studying the many changes the warmer temperatures are bringing to our environment. Some early blooms (like the yellow daffodils we tracked from bulb, to sprout, to bloom) are already wilted, others are in full bloom (tulips, white narcissus, common blue violets) and others have yet to bloom (day lilies). We have been studying the anatomy of flowers and discussing how trees and flowers reproduce. We went on a dandelion hunt and read Little Dandelion Seeds the World, discussing all the ways that dandelions spread their seeds on every continent. We will be reading How does a Seed Sprout and other questions about Plants by Melissa Stewart, and Up in the Garden Down in the Dirt by Kate Messner. We will continue to read Handsprings poems and paintings by Douglas Florian and write our own Spring poetry. We are also continuing to edit and add details to stories we wrote and illustrated about what we did over our recent Spring Break. We are using First, Then, Next, Last statements to sequence the events of our narratives.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?

AN AGE RANGE:  Children entering Kindergarten, Grade 1 or 2  in are encouraged to apply.   Precocious younger children are invited to apply.

AN INCOME RANGE: Wouldn’t it be wonderful if children from families across the socio-economic range could participate in outdoor learning?  Our financial aid program  aims to make this possible.  At Morningside Play Care, we create diverse participation by setting  tuition on a sliding scale. Families from a range of  middle and lower income brackets who wish to enroll but find tuition too challenging for their budget, should fill out the sliding scale financial aid form and return it within five days of submitting their admissions application.   Families who don’t need the aid, should know that by paying full tuition you are helping to enrich every child’s learning environment.

DIVERSITY: We naturally attract a diverse range of families and staff, and we love it!

CURRICULUM MODEL

INSPIRED BY FLYING DEER NATURE CENTER:  Our Forest School curriculum was inspired and co-designed by Flying Deer Nature Center, an upstate wilderness school.  Flying Deer leads Morningside PlayCare’s popular semi-annual Family Nature Day events in the city and upstate.  We’ve  had a close relationship for two decades now, and aspire to the deep relationship with nature that they cultivate in their Columbia County program.

WHAT CHILDREN DO AT SCHOOL: Forest School at MPC includes 70% of each week outdoors. We are an all-weather program – and our parents are taught how to dress their children for the weather.  Children hike and  build shelters.  They problem solve weather challenges as well as social  challenges.  They identify and classify living things – explore, observe, hypothesize, and analyze.  They practice yoga, explore the tough and complex questions posed by nature while wondering about and contemplate life itself.  They read in the grass, write in the snow, paint the  landscape; and solve contextual  arithmetic and geography problems.

INDOOR LEARNING TIME  is  focused  and individualized and engaging and challenging. Thirty percent of each week is spent doing in-door academic learning that groups children by their strengths in a given area.

SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT: The curriculum is particularly designed to support children in developing team-work, self-regulation, mindfulness, and resilience. Children develop a knowledge-and-skills-based sense of self-esteem as they realize that they are becoming experts in nature-science, and outdoor skills.  They confidently share their rich knowledge with old and young alike.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSCIOUSNESS:  As children grow in their relationship with nature, they can’t help but become the environmentally conscious individuals who we need them to become as adults. Respect for all life is a key principle.

Nature calls children to explore and to wonder.
Their eyes widen;
Their souls sing.
We know we've done our job.
